Great Barrier Reef microbiome mapping identifies 500 new bacterial species and 360,000 viral genomes

Researchers have completed a comprehensive genomic mapping of the Great Barrier Reef's microbiome using seawater samples from 48 distinct reef sites. The study identified over 500 previously unknown bacterial species and more than 360,000 distinct viral genomes, providing a baseline for understanding reef ecosystem health.
