EU grants strategic status to KGHM copper mine and smelter projects

The European Commission has designated KGHM's Retków–Grodziszcze copper deposit development and the Huta Miedzi Legnica smelter transformation as strategic projects, unlocking expedited permitting and potential EU funding. KGHM will invest PLN 9.5 billion in these initiatives, which aim to secure domestic copper supply and modernize processing. This marks a significant step for European critical raw materials autonomy, though implementation timelines and final funding remain uncertain.
