US school book bans hit record 12,000 in 2025-26, Texas leads

PEN America reports nearly 12,000 book bans in US public schools for 2025-26, the highest annual total since tracking began in 2021, with Texas accounting for 8,100. The trend reflects ongoing politicization of education and censorship debates, though the report's methodology and scope may be contested.
