Mexico slashes vaquita marina protected area by 80% in 2026 decree

Mexico reduced the vaquita marina protected area to 1,562 sq km, an 80% cut from the 2020 decree. The move reverses prior conservation commitments and may be linked to fishing industry pressure, though official rationale is unclear. This weakens protections for the critically endangered porpoise and could draw international criticism.
