Invasive African Clawed Frog Documented Predating on Native Atacama Toad Eggs in Chile

Researchers at Universidad de Concepción documented the first known instance of the invasive African clawed frog (Xenopus laevis) preying on eggs of the endemic Atacama toad (Rhinella atacamensis) in northern Chile. This adds a new predation threat to the species' existing role as a pathogen vector, potentially accelerating native amphibian declines. The finding is based on direct observation, but the broader ecological impact remains to be quantified.
