VUB-ETH study: Glacial melt underestimated due to short-term climate events

A joint VUB and ETH Zurich study, published Monday, finds that the Global Glacier Evolution Model (GloGEM) underestimates 21st-century glacial volume and speed losses. Using daily mapping of over 12,500 glaciers, the research highlights the amplified impact of short-term climate events like heatwaves and heavy rainfall on ice melt. This suggests current projections may be too conservative, with implications for sea-level rise and water resources.
