Russia's jet-powered Geran-5 drones outpace Ukraine's interceptors, strike Kyiv academy

A Russian Geran-5 jet-powered drone struck the National Academy of Sciences building in central Kyiv, causing a fire and forcing evacuations. This marks a tactical shift as the new drone's speed and flight profile outpace Ukraine's existing interceptor systems, which were optimized for slower propeller drones. The attack underscores a widening capability gap in Ukraine's air defense, with implications for civilian infrastructure and morale.
